What is Adventure Central?

Adventure Central at Wesleyan MetroPark is a youth education center that targets urban youth, kindergarten through age 19 during out-of-school hours. Adventure Central is located on James H. McGee Blvd. and is operated through a partnership between Ohio State University Extension, 4-H Youth Development and Five Rivers MetroParks. Youth learn about their environment through science and nature studies, learn to use computer technology and are involved in homework assistance. In addition to Adventure Central, Wesleyan MetroPark preserves a scenic woodland and offers hiking trails, picnic pavilion and playground equipment.

NDA members will: 

  • Assist with youth development efforts to include afterschool, day camp and club programs
  • Work with staff in providing expanded opportunities for family programming
  • Assist with the development of a youth entrepreneurship program related to program goals and mission
  • Look for opportunities to infuse technology into programming as applicable (ex. GPS, multi media, web page design)
  • Work a variable schedule depending on the season (school year – afternoon and evening, summer – daytime)

NDA member should possess the following skills:

  • Interest in science and nature
  • Strong desire to work with children of all ages in an urban setting
  • Experience with entrepreneurship or willingness to learn
  • Computer skills helpful
  • Reliability, flexibility and willingness to take initiative

Learners of all ages will benefit from the services of NDA members by developing a meaningful relationship over a concentrated period of time.  Adventure Central believes in creating a positive learning environment for staff, volunteers and youth.  A NDA member will gain valuable subject area experience especially for those interested in the fields of science, nature, social work and education.  The NDA member will also benefit from working in a well-structured and organized environment with opportunity for personal growth and development designed to provide high impact for both youth participants and staff/volunteers.

Next term and service begins September 2007. Application due date May 2007.
