Adventure Central Site

The VISTA program's mission is to "increase the capacity of low-income people to improve the conditions of their own lives." VISTA Volunteers will serve others and support community residents and organizations to build their capacity to respond to problems in the community. To volunteer with VISTA is a commitment to national and community service. It is not paid employment. Position Description and Responsibilities: Adventure Central is a youth education center that targets urban youth, kindergarten through age 19 during out-of-school time hours. Adventure Central is a partnership between The Ohio State University Extension 4-H Youth Development and Five Rivers MetroParks.  Adventure Central provides out-of-school time (afterschool and summer) tutoring, science/nature education and positive youth development activities for youth and families in the surrounding community. 

  • VISTA signs a one-year full-time contract to work with OCCN assigned to Adventure Central.
  • VISTA will plan, conduct and evaluate new programming related to technology (parent/family programs, GPS/GIS mapping projects, digital video and editing).
  • VISTA will teach staff and volunteers to lead technology programs.

Qualifications: At least 18 years old, and either a college graduate or someone with at least a few years of work experience and skills. Should be a self-starter and have strong organizational skills. Applicants should have an interest in technology, science and nature as well as a strong desire to work with youth in an urban setting. Applicants should also possess basic computer skills, leadership capabilities and good communication skills. This position is subject to a background check with no disqualifying offenses.

Benefits: Currently, the gross monthly subsistence allowance is $840. Additional benefits include health insurance, post-service stipend ($1,200) or an educational award ($4,725), personal leave, medical leave and others.
