What is Adventure Central?

Adventure Central at Wesleyan MetroPark is a youth education center that targets urban youth, kindergarten through age 19 during out-of-school hours. Adventure Central is located on James H. McGee Blvd. and is operated through a partnership between Ohio State University Extension, 4-H Youth Development and Five Rivers MetroParks. Youth learn about their environment through science and nature studies, learn to use computer technology and are involved in homework assistance.  In addition to Adventure Central, Wesleyan MetroPark preserves a scenic woodland and offers hiking trails, picnic pavilion and playground equipment.

Position Description:  Apprentice responsibilities are to provide hands-on learning opportunities with an emphasis on science, nature and academic advancement.  Duties include planning and conducting programs, tutoring, leading field trips, etc.  Apprentices aid in all phases of programming, exhibit maintenance, and building upkeep.

Qualifications: Apprenticeships are especially suitable for individuals majoring in or considering a career in youth development, teaching, social work, or environmental education. Prefer some experience/knowledge of working with youth in a mentoring or teaching role. Applicants should have interest in science and nature as well as a strong desire to work with children in an urban setting. Computer and phone skills are also helpful.

Salary: Apprentices receive $7.61 per hour and work up to 32 hours per week. No benefits are offered for this part time position.  Hours are negotiable but include evenings during the school year, day times during the summer. Typical days are Monday-Thursday.

Duration: 3 - 12 months; renewable up to 3 years.
